Daggett, Cal. May 24 -Dear Papa -I received your letter enclosing the two money orders - thank you. This is a grand warm morning, 90° now & by noon it will be higher so Im feeling well. Unfortunately Wanda dont enjoy it as much as I do but she is steadily getting better I think. But your plan for her to stay on the desert several months wont work. She is so different from me & cant enjoy just [living?] as I do, & then too while she feels something of the desert\u27s fasination she dont love it as I do. Where I could learn to live content & care-free & be just a little girl Wanda wouldnt be happy - she cant help it - she\u27s simply different. And then she is leaving her two boys - the big one & the little one. We\u27re having a good visit now & it is surely doing her much good, but she intends going to Los Angeles to visit some of her College friends in about two weeks, & from there home. I\u27ll go on getting well & sunburnt - loving my desert & feeling more thankful than ever for my gift of being able to be happy. I think we\u27re going to04200have plenty of warm weather now - its nearing June.Mr Van Dyke got home from San Bernardino yesterday afternoon. Alice Manson sent me more dear flowers by him. Sweet peas & jassimine that make me think of home. The Funks are well & send their kind regards. They are so good to me.I must go now & give this to Dick to mail for No. 3.Ever yoursHelen0420

Daggett, Calif.Feb. 12 -Dear Papa - This is a cold windy day and I am staying close by the fire. The mountains to the South and East are beautifully snowy and make a grand show whenever the sun comes out from the clouds. It tried to snow a little here this morning, but Mr Van Dyke thinks this is just the end of a storm somewhere else. We are04063warm and comfortable here in the shanty. And I am perfectly warm every night no matter how hard the wind blows. I am well and cheerful, and constantly careful.Keennie is getting fat, and like my horse is in good condition. The Van Dykes are well. So is Miss Brodt. I have been thinking that I wont need her when her month is up, but you will be here before that so I can talk it over. How are things getting along and when are you comingLovingly yours Hele

[letterhead]you just ought to see my tent now: I have a good bran, you know I always was s[illegible] so I took it into my heart to make perfectly good hooks on which to hand hat, towels, clothes etc, [with?] big safty p[illegible]gs, turning them upside down and hanging on the catch post - savvy? And I have everything so handy and fine with lots of rubber blankets when it rains.Today has been pretty hot[illegible] , and I have enjoyed the sun and feel simply great. I am getting fat, and go about with no thought of lungs till I come to with a start of surprise to think I havent felt them for so long.
